Coming home

Home, in its most basic term, means the place where one lives permanently, as a member of a family or household. But over the years, I’ve come to realise that home can mean more than simply your place of dwelling.

Throughout life, we encounter various people, travel to different places, go through multitude of experiences, all of which make us feel something. Some things make us feel loved, others make us feel curious to know more, others simply make us feel like we’re back home.

So I feel like the basic definition of home doesn’t really make sense anymore. Home can mean that person that you run to when you feel the whole world is falling apart. Home can be that music album you listen to on repeat just for the sake of how it makes you feel.

Home can be your favourite beach, the place you go to just to be on your own with the sound of the crashing waves. Home can also be the city that feels like maybe, in a past life or something, you must have surely lived there, because as soon as you’re there, you can immerse yourself in the life like you’ve been living there for ages.

Home are friends that you haven’t seen for a while, meeting each other in a new city, but everything falls back into place once you sit down and have a beer together.

What I’m trying to say is that Home is a feeling, and can mean so many things to so many people. You just have to acknowledge that feeling of comfort and peace in a given situation, and there you go – you found it! And lucky for us, we are entitled to more than one home.

So from my writing nook, and one of my homes, I wish that you find yours and embrace them, because they are what make life worth living.

“Home” isn’t easy to define, but you know when you’re there.
